The sweet side of Limburg: explore Borgloon’s historic syrup factory
Did you know that Borgloon was once the heart of Belgium’s traditional fruit syrup production?
On Sunday, 20 December, you can discover this fascinating piece of Limburg’s heritage during a guided tour of the Stroopfabriek, a beautifully restored former syrup factory in the heart of Borgloon.
From local fruit to traditional syrup
Fruit cultivation has shaped the landscape, traditions and local identity of Haspengouw for generations. At the beginning of the 20th century, Borgloon became an important centre for producing Loonse stroop, a traditional thick fruit syrup made from apples and pears.
During this 90-minute guided tour, you’ll explore the historic factory, discover its original machinery and learn how local fruit was transformed into one of Limburg’s best-known regional products.
Your guide will share stories about the people, production techniques and traditions behind this local speciality.
The factory also houses an interactive fruit experience centre, where visitors can learn more about the region’s fruit-growing heritage.
