From international experience to a Belgian degree
Are you new to Belgium and considering higher education? Perhaps you already hold a foreign diploma or have professional experience, but need stronger academic Dutch, effective study skills or specific subject knowledge before starting a degree. Limburg’s preparatory higher-education programme for non-Dutch-speaking newcomers could be your next step.
A recent and pleasant conversation with project coordinator Afaf Reguib revealed just how valuable this opportunity is. The programme supports internationally educated professionals, newcomers and former OKAN students who want to enter higher education in Flanders or Brussels. It is also designed for adults who want to retrain and build a new career through higher education. There is no age limit.
Applicants need at least a secondary-school diploma or an equivalent qualification and some prior knowledge of Dutch. The required entry level is B1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference. Admission also includes a selection procedure.
During this intensive programme, participants improve the academic Dutch needed to follow lectures, understand course materials, complete assignments and take exams. They develop effective study strategies, discover how Belgian higher education works and, depending on their chosen degree, take modules such as science, accounting, mechanics, mathematics, ICT or a second language.
This is a fully-fledged, accredited pathway, supported by the active involvement of key partners including UHasselt, Hogeschool PXL, UCLL, Qrios, CVO and PCVO, alongside many others. The programme is guided and coordinated by the Limburg office of the Agency for Integration and Civic Integration.
Classes take place full-time on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. The programme lasts no longer than one academic year and starts each September.
