Thor Park, a magnet for innovative companies

On the foundations of Limburg’s mining past, the 89-hectare Thor Park in Genk (BE) points the way to the future. No wonder this unique hotspot for smart manufacturing industry, energy and innovation has an international appearance. And right now, the developments on site are gaining momentum.
Business, science and technology campus Thor Park has three main focuses: energy transition, smart manufacturing and smart cities. The ambition is to become the ‘Centre of Excellence’ of smart and sustainable innovation. Shaping the smart world of tomorrow by bridging the gap between ideas and valorisation. All this will lead to more economic activities and job creation.

Thor Park unifies
  • EnergyVille,
  • IncubaThor,
  • T2 campus,
  • Thor Central
  • and the Smart Manufacturing Campus.
Each of these institutions has its own approach.

EnergyVille is a research centre for sustainable energy and intelligent energy systems. The centre develops technologies and knowledge to support public and private stakeholders in their transition to an energy-efficient, decarbonised and sustainable urban environment. With approximately 400 researchers and state-of-the-art facilities, EnergyVille is a top European innovation hub in the field of energy.
IncubaThor is the incubator for companies that focus on smart energy, innovation

and technology. It’s the ideal base for start-ups as well as for mature companies. Starters can take the plunge, researchers can start spin-off activities, SMEs can continue their growth, and larger (international) companies can call on the competences from scientific research in a stimulating environment.

T2 campus is a tech talent hub, which stimulates lifelong learning about technique and technology. It’s the missing link between tech education and the labour market. The engineering and technology hub has an innovative range of training opportunities, activities and content for students, employees, entrepreneurs and job seekers. And all of that in a state-of-the-art infrastructure.
Thor Central is the beating heart of Thor Park. The business and facility centre has an auditorium, a grand foyer, various small and large meeting rooms and a food plaza. It supports companies that are located on site and creates a community for Thor. At the same time, Thor Central is a unique MICE venue for groups of 10 to 1,500 people. The venue attracts international conferences according to the three-chair principle: every conference participant has a meeting room, break-out room and lunch place available.
Last but certainly not least, the Smart Manufacturing Campus is the fifth entity. Part of this brand new building for smart manufacturing companies will be taken into use as from the end of 2022. The campus offers production, lab and office space for companies that want to scale up their production and assembly ideas. It wants to stimulate smart, sustainable, circular and connected manufacturing. The final result will be a building of 30,000 m². To fill the available space, the Smart Manufacturing Campus targets start-ups, scale-ups, SMEs, but also large (inter)national companies that want to renew their manufacturing process.
